Oil tankers transport oils of different grades and qualities that can produce flammable vapors and gases during loading, unloading, and transit. Even when empty, hazardous flammable gases may linger in the tanks.
When the vapor from an oil cargo mixes with a specific air-oxygen concentration, it can create explosive conditions, leading to property damage, marine pollution, and loss of life.
To minimize explosion risks, ships use an Inert Gas System (IGS). The IGS aims to create an atmosphere in the cargo tanks that prevents fire and explosions by removing enough oxygen to sustain combustion.

This course aims to provide learners with a fundamental understanding of the statutory requirements for the installation and use of Inert Gas Systems, their components and operational procedures.
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Describe the purpose and benefits of Inert Gas Systems, as well as the SOLAS regulations concerning these systems based on tanker type and construction date.
- Identify and describe the functions of the components in both Inert Gas Generator and Flue Gas Inert Gas Systems.
- Explain how to safely and effectively operate the Inert Gas System following established procedures and guidelines.
